  • Hikae is the shortest of the stems used in an arrangement.
  • Juushi are the supporting stems that are used. The main stems, Shin,  Soe and Hikae each have their own supporting stem should the main stem not be strong enough alone. The Juushi used should never be longer that the master stem.

Terminology Specific to Nageire Arrangements

  • A Jumonji dome is a technique used to hold the flowers in place. It is done by creating a cross made from strong branches and placed at the mouth of a vase. This is also sometimes referred to as a cross bar fixture.
  • The Jika dome is the technique used to insert flowers in the vase by cutting the end from a stem in order for it to lean on the containers inside wall. This is also referred to as direct fixing.
  • The Soegi dome is the Nageire technique where length is added to a flower by splitting the stems end in two. The technique helps to hold the flowers in place.

Terminology Relating To Moribana Arrangements

  • The Kenzan is only used when designing a Moribana arrangement. This is a piece of metal that has sharp pointed needles used to insert the flowers and to hold them in place. The Kenzan is placed in a fixed position and used in a suiban. The positioning will depend on the style of Moribana arrangement being designed.
  • A Suiban is the container used for Moribana arrangements. The container should be shallow in design.

The Ikebana Diagram

A Kakeizu is the diagram used in making an Ikebana flower arrangement. The diagram shows the angles and positions of the flowers and the foliage that are used in the arrangements. The diagram is necessary in order to make an authentic looking arrangement and will make choosing the flowers needed for making the design of your choice.
