A great feature of romantic poems is that they’re never outdated and come in many formats. I particularly love them because throughout time, we’ve taken so many wise or funny life quotes straight from poetry.
Almost everyone knows this one, from our wise quotes about love: “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” Written by English poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, it is titled, In Memoriam A.H.H. It wasn’t even authored as a romantic love poem, but rather to mourn the sudden death of his friend. Still, it is plainly true for people who have lost at romance. We quote it to encourage them to continue risking their hearts because the experience of loving is worth any hurt.
What is Poetry?
Romantic poems span all poetic forms. We’ve heard or read deep romantic love poems and sweet romantic love poems. Poetry is more than just making words and phrases rhyme. Some poetry requires no rhyme. What makes poetry different from other writing is that the words bring a sense of movement and sound to create feelings in the listener or reader. Even that sounds romantic to me!
Poetry is many things to literature, art, music, and life. Some people write poetry for a living in careers like songwriters, journalists, advertising copywriters, and the whole crew of creative writers that pen short romantic poems for greeting cards.
Examples of Short Romantic Poems and Styles
Romantic poems are found in every recognized format of literature. Poets of romancing fame are Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Maya Angelou, and every generation’s favorite songwriters. Less formally crafted examples include:
- “You have to walk carefully in the beginning of love; the running across fields into your lover’s arms can only come later when you’re sure they won’t laugh if you trip.”
This is and example of Free Verse, the no rules say-what-you-want-but-create-an-image-rhythm-and-feel style of poetry. It comes from the 1991 novel “Outside the Dog Museum” by Jonathan Carroll. As his main character espouses the lessons he’s learned about love. There’s no rhyme or shape, but a sense of stumbling, image of slo-mo movie clips, and a feeling of relief from someone who loves you and your clumsiness.
Rhymes are not required in Blank Verse, but meter (rhythm) is. Rap music, although critics say it has no romance, is blank verse. Consider the lyrics from eLZhi’s song, S.A.R.A.H.:
- “It’s a cold cold world. I steady, put myself out there. Wearin’ it thin; Eventually lovesick. She’s beautiful…”
The rhythm and words communicate the age old story of unreturned love. We nod our heads and understand because we’ve been him, or her, or them…
Express Yourself!
Try a poem next time you want to say something memorable to the one you love. It can be fun to stretch your vocabulary and style. Your poem could be an elaborate sonnet or a “Roses are red, violets are blue…” rhyme.
If the mere idea makes you want to run screaming from the room, that’s OK. Some people use words easily and some don’t. Your words may come out like the anonymous fellow’s in this limerick:
‘Oh Romeo, wherefore art thou?’
‘Well, I’m under the balcony, Cow;
I’m picking a rose
In my doublet and hose and I …
What do I say to you now?’
YOU CAN STILL USE POETRY! The Internet has replaced the library with rapid search capacity for keyword phrases like “short romantic poems for him” or “short romantic poems for her.” Plenty of websites include free emailed greeting cards that allow you to type in or choose a pre-worded card for the one you love.
You can be serious, mushy, profound, intimate or funny using poetry to romance your sweetheart. It will be greatly appreciated when you give short romantic poems for girlfriend whether you wrote it or someone else did. Promise!
